Los Rápidos del Río Frio en Sarapiqui - White Water Rafting on the Rapids of the Cold River of Sarapiqui

There are many differences between the Tico culture and what I already know about other cultures. All of the Ticos speak to everyone in the Usted/Ustedes form in Spanish. This is the very formal/polite form in almost all the other countries. It has been difficult for me to use this form all the time because I am more comfortable using the Tú form, which is the informal/familiar, and it's what all the books tell us to use after you know or meet someone for the first time. Also there are many phrases and sayings that are totally Tico.

I really like the 'sodas'. There are many on almost every street corner or building around the University campus. Almost everyday we eat lunch in a 'soda'. The typical dish in a 'soda' is a "casado" (married). A 'casado' consists of some sort of meat, rice, beans, sweet plantains and a small salad of some sort.

Also, Tico food is a only a little bit different from the other Latino countries. It is not very spicy and they seem to eat rice, beans and maduros (sweet plantains) with almost every meal.

The ticos eat ceviche (cold seafood salad, where the seafood is cooked by the acid of lime juice) and other typical Latino foods. Also, there are a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. Breakfast is usually some fruit, a piece of bread and coffee. The coffee usually only has sugar.

This week I have tried "tacos ticos" as well. But they are not like Mexican tacos. There are closer to beef taquitos with a mix of cabbages and carrots with some dressings on top of it. They were good but different.

This week there were many adventures around San Jose and Costa Rica.

Thursday I went to the city of Cartago. Cartago was the original capital of Costa Rica before San Jose. I went to a place called The Ruins. It was a cathedral that had every time they tried to continue building it, an earthquake hit and destroyed it. So it remains unfinished. Afterwards we went to the Basilica of the Virgen of the Angels. It was very beautiful. The image of the Virgen there is called "la Negrita" because it is made of balcony volcanic rock and it's really small. There are tons of cabinets underneath the cathedral full of devotions and idols that people who had prayed for miracles and cures had sent back to the cathedral in thanks to the Virgen. They are things made out of silver in many different shapes.

Saturday we went on a cruise to Tortuga island. I spent the day on the beach and it was wonderful! I saw many different animals on the island. The islands get their names because they look like turtles floating in the water. I swam a lot in the Gulf of Nicoya because the water was warm and refreshing. The cruise in the catamaran was really great! I have never traveled in this type of boat before.
